SYNOPSIS

The exploration of outer space has created technology and applications benefitting various aspects’ of people’s lives today. Including communications systems, broadcasting and the internet, mapping, vehicle navigation systems, weather information & so on. Space technologies are also used to assist the national security aspect but also contribute to economic through data, technology and applications. The National Space Policy will provide the scope and framework for the space sector development in Malaysia, for example, focusing on the space program that woulf provide higher returns to the people and the country. This policy also aims to safeguard the interests of the country by recognizing the need for access to space capabilities to improve the services needed by the people and national security. It will also serve as a reference in determining the direction of development of space activities in Malaysia to make full use of space capabilities, and align the priorities and commitments in the field of space strategically and put the appropriate resources for best results.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Dr. Noordin Ahmad is currently the Director General of the National Space Agency of Malaysia (ANGKASA). He has more than years of experience in work related to space technology and applications. He obtained his Geomatics degree from University of Melbourne, Australia in 1984 and PhD in GPS Positioning from University of Newcastle, UK in 1988. Prior to joining ANGKASA, he was a Geospatial consultant involving in many GIS, GNSS and Remote Sensing consultancy works. He is also an adjunct lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UTM) since 1998 with more than 50 journal papers and has supervised more than 30 Masters and PhD research graduates. He is actively involved in the Geospatial sector and members of several technical committees on GNSS and GIS both locally and at regional level. He has won several prestigious awards and competitions at international level such as British High Commissioner Award, Asia Geospatial Excellence Award and Gold award for inventions at Geneva (Switzerland), Nuremburg (Germany), Manila (Philippines) and Madrid (Spain).
