Synopsis for “WATER QUALITY”

Water, air, food, shelter are all essential items for any living being. It is possible to survive without food and shelter for some days but without water, it is not possible to survive for too long. Water quality requirements vary according to the proposed use of the water such as for domestic use, agricultural use, fish, specific industrial and recreational use and power generation. Water quality standards are normally set by Governmental agencies and represent a statutory requirement. In Malaysia, we have agencies related to this subject such as the National Water Commission (SPAN) and the Departments of environment, Drainage and Irrigation, Water supply, Sewerage, City councils and local councils.

There are also various acts in placed such as Water services industry act, Sewerage services act, Environmental quality acts and local council acts. As for in – stream standards, for reasons of aesthetics as well as health,it is generally considered desirable to maintain natural water systems at as high a quality level as possible. Wastewater discharges and other human activities often have significant impact on in-stream water quality.

Can water quality level be affected due to lack of effective coordination amongst various relevant agencies?
Can water quality level be affected due improper designing?
Can water quality level be affected due to lack of supervision?
Can water quality level be affected due to illegal discharges from industrial areas?
Can water quality level be affected due to lengthy land acquisition process?
Can water quality level be affected due to site constraints?
Can water quality level be affected due to public protests?
Can water quality level be affected due to difficult site conditions?
Can water quality level be affected due to improper construction management?
Can water quality level be affected due to improper sampling and measurements?
Can water quality level be affected due faulty lab tests?
Can water quality level be affected due to under estimate?
Can water quality level be affected due lack of maintenance?
Can water quality level be affected due to lack of enforcements?
Can water quality level be affected due to lack of monitoring and control?
Thus, it is prudent that undertaking of these projects require proper planning, designing, tendering, construction, testing & commissioning, CCC, maintenance, monitoring and control.

After completing these two days, participants are expected to know and understand the importance of project cycle, water cycle, water quality, factors contributing to pollution of water bodies, identifying the pollutants and its probable sources, types of treatments and existing acts/laws/regulations related to water quality.
