An Overview
The One Belt One Road (OBOR) Initiative as promoted by China and supported by a number of countries has been the subject of much discussion, contestation and argument in the press of late. Politics aside, the main goal of the seminar deals with the potential economic development and thus the progress bring about by this OBOR Initiative, and how this scheme affects our engineers.
In land economic literature, the concept of “general accessibility” refers to the speedy communication between two points made possible by land routes, sea routes, air routes, or as in this modern era the ICT. In fact, land which are most accessible usually command the highest land value. Following from this line of argument, products from the East can be exported to the market in the West and vice versa. Both land in the East and the West benefit from this transaction. And naturally too, land along the routes of East-West trading stand to benefit as their products are accessible to both the East and the West markets.
The organizers (IEM’s UEDSIG and MITRANS) have assembled some of the most competent and authoritative speakers who are movers and shakers in research/transportation industries to share with the participants their experience about the origin, rationality, and impact of the OBOR Initiative. In the end, the question to ask is what is in store for engineers in Malaysia?
