Synopsis

Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency, has attracted worldwide interest in recent years since it was first created in 2008. The underlying technology of Bitcoin called Blockchain has attracted more attention by strategic thinkers, governments and regulators due to its potential to provide the Internet of Value moving on from the current Internet of Information. Blockchain is a disruptive technology and can eliminate dependency on central trusted parties to facilitate transactions. These trusted parties include certain functions in the banking and finance industry, government services, stock exchange, supply chain and other areas.

Several authors and conference speakers have said that “The Blockchain today is what the World Wide Web was in 1992. Blockchain will impact all aspects of society just as the WWW has impacted and engrained in today’s economy, government and society, but in a shorter timeframe”. Hence Blockchain is not merely a technology to watch but to be seriously explored for implementation.

The talk will provide an overview of Bitcoin and Blockchain and current and emerging trends on Blockchain, which covers diverse areas like banking and finance, trade, Smart Cities and Internet of Things and the use of Smart Contracts with Blockchain.
