SYNOPSIS

ISO 9001 is a quality management system (QMS) standard which was published as part of the ISO 9000 series standards for quality assurance and quality management in 1987 by ISO Technical Committee 176. The current edition of ISO 9001 is 4th edition which was revised on 15th November 2008.

The standard can be adopted on a voluntary basis or as per regulatory & statutory requirements in all economic sectors including the food chain. The food chain encompasses categories of animal farming, plants farming, processing of perishable animal products including all activities after farming, e.g. slaughtering, processing of perishable vegetal products, processing of products with long shelf life at ambient  temperature, feed production, catering, distribution, services, transport and storage, equipment manufacturing, bio-chemical manufacturing and packaging material manufacturing. QMS requirements are generic and are applicable to all sizes organizations within the food chain which may cover the scope of preparation, processing, packaging, storage & distribution until serving the product for customer consumption.

The implementation of QMS involves 2 stages namely the documentation and practical implementation. The values of an effective ISO 9001:2008 in the food chain are new markets for goods and services, enhanced customer satisfaction, increased cost effectiveness, operational sustainability and other benefits.
