Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies that engineers may encounter be it at construction sites or at industrial plants. Such emergencies include heart attacks, electrical shocks or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

Statistics indicate that 70-80% of heart attacks occur either in the home or in public areas.  In such cases, the person nearest at hand to the victim is often a bystander with no medical expertise such as a relative, an office colleague or a passer-by. If those at the scene are able to provide CPR to the victim promptly, the latter’s chances of survival are significantly increased.

Why learn CPR - Cardiac arrests are more common than you think and they can happen to anyone at any time. Nearly 383,000 “out of hospital” sudden cardiac arrests occur annually and 88% of cardiac arrests occur at home.  Many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors.  Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack.

Who can you save with CPR - The life you can save with CPR is most likely to be a loved one.  4 out of 5 cardiac arrests happen at home.

Why take action – Failure to act in a cardiac emergency can lead to unnecessary deaths. Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival, but only 32% of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander. Sadly, less than 8% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital survive
