Synopsis
In Malaysia, Coaching program was first introduced on a large scale by University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCed) in 2004. Since then, many coaching programs are made available for public and the coaching approach has been applied and expanded to various sectors both in public and private. Coaching has become an effective alternative in planning and implementing strategic plans for human capital development within public organisations, businesses and corporations.
Coaching program focuses on techniques to help executives and individuals from various sectors to achieve and become successful in their endeavor to improve their capability, potential, goal-settings, discipline and accountability. The coaching program is also highly competitive in training method and in conventional consultancy services when compared with other management intervention tools in the market for human capital development.
As quoted by Fast Company Magazine, USA, “Up to 40% of Fortune 500 companies hire coaches to improve their businesses.”
There is another finding by International Personal Management Association, US that “Training accompanied by coaching can improve performance by 88%, rather than just training alone, which improves performance by only 22%.”
About the Speaker
Ir. Hj. Md.Nasir Baharom graduated from University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom in 1982 with a Bachelor degree (Hons.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and in 1991, obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from the same university. In addition, he has a Master in Counseling degree from University of Malaya (UM) in 2015. He is a Professional Engineer, a Registered Counselor, and a Certified Coach from UM Centre for Continuing Education (UMCCed).
He began his career with Telekom Malaysia in 1982 as an Assistant Controller in Johor Bahru. Apart from his technical experience, he has wide management experience in both local and overseas environment. He became Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Telekom Networks Malawi from 2000-2003 and later on as Managing Director for TM International (Bangladesh) from 2003-2005. Both companies were joint-venture initiatives largely owned by TM and located in Malawi and Bangladesh respectively. They operated as nationwide mobile service provider for those countries. After working with TM for around 23 years, he opted for VSS and resigned from TM in 2005.
Later on, he worked with start-up company QucomHaps Sdn. Bhd. as Vice-President Network Services. Then for a short stint in 2009, he worked with Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) as Head of Sector Development. At the end 2009 until 2012, he worked with UMCCed as Head for Coaching, Short Programs and Event Management. Currently he is Managing Director for N2B Sempurna Sdn Bhd and also a practicing partner in Perunding Bersatu Engineering Consultancy firm.
During his stint in Malawi, Telekom Networks Malawi won the International Gold Star Quality Award. While in Bangladesh, he won the prestigious C.R.Das Gold Medal Award and Financial Mirror Business Personality of the Year 2004 Award. He was Vice-President in Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 2004 until 2005. He was a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), USA from 1994 until 1998. Currently he is a member of Institute of Engineer Malaysia since 1987 until now.
