SYNOPSIS

A major portion of the substructure project success, involves effective ground risk management whilst ensuring the structural requirements are met and geotechnical conditions have been efficiently addressed.  The suitability of a particular design, construction method and job site implementation are key success factors in any piling project to meet technical, time and budget constraints. The advances in Piling engineering has evolved out of a combination of increased understanding of pile performance, monitoring and verification testing as well as rapid innovations in plant and equipment.  The ever increasing demand for load performance, reliability in quality, safer piling in urban areas, has allowed the specialist industry to adopt innovative approaches. This lecture mainly deals with one of those piling techniques, namely Auger cast piling from the Australian perspective.  Auger cast piling is a widely used piling construction method in Europe, Australia and USA.  The method involves drilling with a hollow stem auger to required depth and forming the pile upon concreting during extraction. In this presentation, various aspects of Auger cast pile construction will be covered and include design, technical, plant, construction, quality and site control systems.  Case studies will also be presented, with time for questions and discussion.

PROFILE OF SPEAKER

Dr Serhat Baycan is a leading geotechnical and piling specialist with over 20 years of experience in geotechnical research, consulting and contracting.  He is currently the Head of Heavy Foundations - Keller Malaysia, based in Kuala Lumpur.
He was previously managing director of a Keller company in Australia - Vibropile Australia Pty Ltd with technical and operational performance responsibility where he spent 15 years.  During his career, he has also worked on global projects with engineering consultants with Maunsell (Aecom), Coffey Geosciences and Haskoning Group UK. He has particular expertise in deep foundations with Augercast, bored and driven piling applications and has a passion for efficient ground engineering solutions. He is a certified practicing engineer (CPEng) with the Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust) and a member of the Australian Geomechanics Society, obtaining his PhD from Monash University in Australia in 1997.
