SYNOPSIS
Stormwater treatment is gradually but certainly being recognized as an important and effective solution to stormwater pollution control in Malaysia over the last 10 to 15 years. In reality there are still lots of trial and error happening, as engineers learn what works and what doesn’t by designing and installing solution with varying degrees of success. An overview of the approach to stormwater pollution management in terms of planning and design can be broken down into five key areas: • Prevention: Regulations, education, industry audits and better planning. • Source control: Pit baskets, streets sweeping, having spill control kits and WSUD. • Primary treatment: CDS units, GPTs, trash racks, nets, booms and sediment basins. • Secondary treatment: Via rain garden wetlands, swales, infiltration and media filtration. • Tertiary treatment and reuse: Biological treatment, disinfection, storage and reuse.
