SYNOPSIS

SCILAB is an open source scientific software package for numerical computations providing a powerful open computing environment for engineering and scientific applications, and as an alternative to the commercial product MATLAB.

The goal of this technical session is for us to showcase and skills associated to SCILAB for Engineering and Science. By understanding the features and benefits of SCILAB in managing real matrices, linear algebra, structured programming and graphics, you will now achieve faster development process in your work. The SCILAB language allows to dynamically compiled and link other languages such as FORTRAN and C: by which external libraries can be used as though they were part of SCILAB built-in features. With the SCILAB software distributed with the source code, users have access to SCILAB’s most internal aspects for development. Well, in most cases, users would download and install the binary version with Windows, Linus and MAC OS platforms.

Also, this session demonstrates various examples for anyone who wants to explore on the features and capabilities of SCILAB for research and teaching in various application: ranging from data analysis, signal to image processing, control systems, artificial intelligence and beyond.

By utilizing the open source software, you now have the freedom to use and explore like never before.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Chin Luh graduates with a First Class Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, majoring in Control Engineering and with a Master’s Degree in Computer and Communication Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia. His excellent academic knowledge and extensive experience in makes him an exceptional technical member in real-time embedded control, data acquisition system, speech recognition system and image processing and automation system. Upon graduation, Chin Luh has worked as an Application Engineer with several organizations in providing technical application and support.

During this period, he has completed several projects for organizations such as Agilent, Avago and TNB in the field of image processing & analysis for camera quality measurement, speech recognition using neural network, and real-time control implementation using high-level programming approach. He has also successfully developed control based course information for the teaching of control subjects incorporating technical software and laboratory equipment hardware.

Now, as the Technical Director with Trity Technologies Sdn Bhd and coupled with his extensive experience in technical and consultation, Chin Luh shares his expertise on technical computation and analysis using the open source software SCILAB/SCICOS. In particular, he has provided solutions for control-based laboratory equipment hardware for various institutions, both for research and teaching.
