SYNOPSIS

In the past decade, building information modeling (BIM) technology has achieved numerous application results in the field of construction engineering in UK, United States, Japan and other countries and regions. At present, the construction industry informatization of Hong Kong has entered a new stage of rapid development, the promotion and application of BIM technology has ushered in a new strategic development opportunity.
According to the current development trend of BIM, it is not difficult to expect BIM will have a wide range of development and application in the future. However, the lack of BIM industry exchange platform and the fail of localization of the successful application of BIM experience in foreign countries will restrict the profound application of BIM in the long term.

It has been ten years since the BIM technology was imported from overseas to Hong Kong. During these years, a lot of Hong Kong local engineers and quantity surveyors started to know, than to use this technology. But the current situation is that most of the users didn’t finish any systematic BIM training program. Due to the lack of comprehensive understanding of BIM technology, the standard that is suitable for Hong Kong region and can be accepted by Hong Kong local construction industry is not formulated.

According to the report of Malaysia Sinchew, the Malaysia government is considering to follow the footsteps of Singapore and the UK, planning to introduce policy about enforcing using building information modeling. Kerame, CEO of Malaysia Construction Industry Development Bureau (CIDB) and other members of the team said that "We are considering how to make BIM more applied in the construction industry, and let BIM be forced to use may be the next step in their work".

In Malaysia, it has been proved that when applying the BIM technology to construction industry projects, the error rates will decrease and therefore, the cost will reduce. However, related software purchase cost is very high, and it needs experienced staff to operate the software. Kerame said, CIDB is to promote the development of BIM, and is about establishing BIM training center to provide systematic BIM training.
During the seminar, Miranda, Mr Shih and Ivan will share the latest BIM development in the global and how BIM can benefit infrastructure and Civil Engineering industry in Malaysia.
