Ulu Muda forests cover an area of approximately 163,000ha (about twice the size of Perlis) located within the districts of Baling, Padang Terap and Sik in the north-eastern corner of Kedah. The Ulu Muda forests consist of 8 forest reserves, the biggest of which is the Ulu Muda Forests Reserve. They are the catchment forests for the three large man-made dams namely Muda, Pedu and Ahning that collect water for use in Kedah, Penang and Perlis for rice cultivation, domestic consumption and industrial usage. Ulu Muda forest has been largely unexplored. Its size and contiguous connections to the forests in Northern Thailand supports many large mammals. It has 10 known salt licks within its boundary and the numbers of large mammals such as the Asiatic elephants, seladang, tapir, tigers, sun-bears, etc.
