Synopsis

Public awareness on pavement quality and the increasing maintenance cost have gained significant attention lately. This has triggered the road industry’s to address the increasing demands and needs more seriously. This means the efforts in managing the pavement maintenance process and cost is crucial.  Engineering parameter such as riding quality and the life cycle cost are two common factors that are commonly used by the road user to evaluate the performance of road and the operators.

International Roughness Index (IRI) is one of the main parameters used to determine the riding quality.  IRI has been used extensively to measure the road profile and riding quality on many roads in Malaysia. The quarter-car vehicle math model is used to calculate the accumulated response and yield the roughness index with units of slope measured in in/mi, m/km etc. The equipment and methodology plays an important role in the pavement construction for good riding quality and durable pavement structure.

The durability of pavement materials determine the life cycle of a pavement.  Selection of suitable materials and construction process are crucial to ensure the maintenance cost is within the budget.  Many new materials and pavement maintenance processes have been introduced.  One of the famous solutions is the Cold In Place Pavement Recycling (CIPR) of the road base by using Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) as a bonding agent while reusing the existing pavement materials. Understanding of engineering principles of CIPR technology is essential in today’s maintenance program.

This training course will discuss the fundamental of pavement maintenance, materials used, processes and real life case studies being practiced in Malaysia.
