SYNOPSIS

Piping system is an important facility on an offshore platform. The design of the piping system has to consider a lot of factors to ensure that its integrity will last throughout the design life. A Pipe Stress Analysis is required in pipe routing design and is highly interrelated with piping configuration (piping layout) and pipe support design. The design of a piping layout and the pipe supports must satisfy the requirement of pipe stress analysis by providing sufficient flexibility and rigidity for thermal expansion and various load cases imposed on the piping system.

It is important to evaluate the mechanical behaviour of the piping system under various loads as stipulated in codes and standards such as ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) to ensure that the integrity of the piping system is preserved. In the old days, the analysis is usually done manually and is time consuming and tedious. Nowadays, many software applications are available to assist with the analysis. One such program is CAESAR II. The talk will provide an introduction to the process of modelling and analyzing a piping system to prevent failures due to overstress which could lead impact to human life, facility and environment.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Omar Anuar Roslay (PE/MIEM) graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (Mechanical) from University Technology of MARA (UiTM).

He started his professional career with Samsung Electronics (M) Sdn. Bhd. as a Development Engineer (Mechanical) specializing in metal stamping and plastic injection. In 2008, he moved into the oil and gas industry as PDMS Design Engineer with RNZ Integrated Sdn. Bhd. (also known as Petrofac Engineering Services Sdn. Bhd.) and currently holds a position as Senior Piping Engineer. He has a total of 7 years of experience in consolidating equipment and safety layout development, piping engineering (material specification), piping layout design (3D modelling) and pipe stress analysis for various stages of design starting from conceptual, front end engineering design (FEED) and detailed design. His current focus is on pipe stress analysis (finite element analysis) for both Brownfield and Greenfield projects in Malaysia, Vietnam, Iran, Qatar and Turkmenistan.

Apart from that, Ir. Omar Anuar is a part-time lecturer attached with CGT Petroleum for Intensive Course and Diploma (in collaboration with UTM) in Process Piping Engineering Design.
