SYNOPSIS

Parts of Malaysia is known to experience seismic movement due earthquakes.  Malaysia is bordered by Indonesia and the Philippines, which are two of the most seismically active countries with frequent intense earthquakes. Malaysia faces a certain degree of earthquake risk from these distant earthquakes. Major earthquakes, with long period surface waves originating from Sumatra have been felt in Peninsular Malaysia, particularly the west coast.

Civil and Structure Engineers are adopting the Eurocode for their building design. In that code there are elements for the ‘design of structures for earthquake resistance’. It is high time that Mechanical Engineers incorporate such seismic preventive measures into the M&E services. Loss history in earthquake prone areas have shown that many building losses caused by fire following, equipment toppling and cracking or breaking of liquid and gas lines. These can be prevented when those M&E services incorporate the properly designed and installed shut-offs, flexibility, bracing and/or anchoring.  This seminar will explore and present some of the M&E seismic components and equipment that are widely available in the industry.

BIODATA OF SPEAKERS

Ir. Loo Chee Kin is a loss prevention consultant engineer with FM Global. He has more that 17 year engineering experience, from design to field work, since graduating from UMIST, Manchester, UK with a B.Eng in Electromechanical Systems Engineering. He is a P.Eng in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and a Member of IEM. He is a Member of IMechE and IEE, and registered C.Eng. He is an active committee member in the IEM’s Mechanical Engineering Technical Division as well as various Sub-Committees and Boards.

Ir. Soong Peng Soon graduated from University of Malaya in year 1984 and has more than 28 years in the design, manufacturing, construction and testing of general M&E system especially in HVAC system & components. He was once the Factory Manager of one of the largest ACMV equipment manufacturer & was once the General Manager of one of the largest ductwork & piping contractor in Malaysia and has vast experience in many of the mega-projects in Malaysia. His success in adhering to the stringent standard for the construction and testing of ACMV system in Petronas Twin Towers project marked the peak of his career in the industry. He has subsequently involved in the construction of several super high rise buildings in Middle East whereby seismic restraint requirement is more stringent than PTT.  Presently he is an advisor for Malaysian and international contractors who involve in prestigious projects in Malaysia & overseas such as Middle East. Also, he is now  one of the few best Commissioning Engineers for the technical intensive green building rating systems such as GBI or LEED.  He will discuss the prevailing seismic restraint standard such as SMACNA guideline for the site requirement & quality assurance of mechanical system.

Mr. David Jeltes is Registered Professional Engineer (USA) with over 25 year experience. His background includes project development / design / construction, product applications, training, committee representation and product management. David has been with ERICO 2 1/2 years first as Worldwide Market Manager for Seismic and is current Product Manager for Seismic. Currently, David represents ERICO on two national seismic committees: (1) NFPA Technical Committee on Hanging and Bracing of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, and (2) ASHRAE TC 2.7 "Seismic and Wind Restraint Design". While on ASHRAE TC 2.7,, David was an integral part of the development of the rigid bracing section of the ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 171-2008 "Method of Testing Seismic Restraint Devices for HVAC&R Equipment. In addition, David also has experience in the development and approval of two (2) seismic bracing Pre-Approvals for California OSHPD (Office of State Wide Health Planning and Planning Development) – one for fire sprinkler bracing and the other for MEP systems using strut channel bracing.

Mr. Louise Tan graduated from University of Malaya in 2002, with a degree in Computer Science. He has been involved in the building and construction industry for the past 10 years. His previously worked as a project estimator and sales engineer in Johnson Controls, dealing with BMS, security and fire alarm systems. He then joined Victaulic in 2006, now working as a Fire Protection Specialist covering Malaysia and Singapore. The name a few, his successful involvement were in major projects such as Mid Valley the Gardens Mall, Putrajaya 4G8-11, Marina Bay Sands & KLCC Lot C.

Dipl.Ing. MuljadyWongsonegoro graduated fromInstitut of Technology Hamburg, Germany in 1995. He has work as Engineer & Product Manager with PT.Hilti Nusantara from 1996 to 1999. He is now the Technical Director & Managing Director of Mr.Safety Group and also BBP International Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia. The latter is the agent for the fischerwerke GmbH and Co KG fasteners and anchors.

Mr PareshkumarRameshchandra Shah is the Engineering Manager in CST Industries, UK. He obtained his BE Civil from M.S.University of Baroda, India in 1995 and Post Graduate Diploma in Structural Design (PGDSD) from Centre for Environmental Planning & Technology (CEPT), India in 2000. He is responsible for all the technical matters in this company in UK and internationally. His Key responsibilities include approval of design calculations and resolution of technical query, responsible for approval to various standards, implementation of Eurocode, design of tanks with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and design of tanks in moderate to heavy seismic area to various standards. CST tanks are made from epoxy coated, galvanized and glass-fused to steel tanks. He is s CEng MIStructE and MICE.
