SYNOPSIS

This presentation describes an IT based ‘cloud’ computing technology platform (iSCADA) which is used to innovatively deliver data from any traditional SCADA, alarm or metering sensor suite.

SCADA, automated alarms and metering systems are at the heart of many traditional engineering solutions and the internet has had a significant impact on this technology, commonly referred to as ‘the internet of things’. This talk is focused on the emergence of the latest generation of internet based advanced monitoring and control technology, introducing the many disparate applications already deployed using iSCADA.

iSCADA is a Hosted Data Acquisition platform consisting of both hardware and software components, developed in Malaysia by Devices World.  It evolved to address emerging requirements for a low cost, internet based data acquisition infrastructure that can be adapted to meet many diverse data acquisition environments.  In acknowledgement of the importance of keeping current with internet based technology developments, the iSCADA platform has emerged today as a state of the art SCADA system deploying the latest web technology.  This platform has been deployed to address many cost sensitive applications where traditional SCADA could not meet exacting project cost constraints.

The development of the iSCADA platform is an ongoing process.  This process is described in overview from the deployment of the first version of this system in 2003. The present system (iSCADA Version 3) has evolved as a result of increasingly sophisticated customer requirements and expanding application areas in the course of the usage of this system.

This presentation will be of interest to facility managers, energy efficiency professionals, SCADA system experts, consulting engineers in M&E solutions and all engineers interested in how the internet is affecting traditional SCADA solutions.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Eddy is presently the CEO of Devices World, a company involved in conceptualizing, developing and deploying hosted data acquisition systems.  His intimate knowledge of the business processes applicable to presently deployed, data acquisition infrastructures based around cloud computing technology allows him to provide highly effective advise on using these infrastructure elements to derive innovative solutions used in addressing evolving business and technology issues. One of these emerging business areas is in energy efficiency and the smart grid. Apart from this area of specialization, Eddy also has expertise in business/technology risk mitigation and conceptualization of new business processes to accommodate advanced IT technology usage in many environments.

Eddy has very diverse technology deployment experience.  As a data acquisition engineer operating in the oil industry (working for Schlumberger, a multinational technology company), he was involved in managing and deploying highly advanced data acquisition systems using state of the art data acquisition technology.  He moved on to a manufacturing environment where he developed an expertise in energy (KWh) metering, water and gas metering systems, automated meter reading systems and smart grid technology.  He was also at various times responsible for managing the deployment of large scale IT systems in government (MyKad, ePassport), the banking segment (EMV credit cards), transportation (common ticketing system – Touch & Go) and also the fuel retail industry where he was lead technology and business consultant for Shell, advising on their cashless retail payment systems.

Eddy is a committee member of the Information and Communications Technology Special Interest Group (ICTSIG) in IEM.
