SYNOPSIS
Over the years sewerage industry in Malaysia had greatly progressed from the basic sewage treatment pond facilities to advanced treatment systems that secures our nation’s public health and safeguard our environment. Nevertheless for future sustainability, another leap in transformation of the industry is required. For this reality to transpire, sewage needs to be seen as a resource, whereby sewage treatment plants (STPs) are no longer operated a waste treatment centre rather as “waste to wealth recovery centre”. The resources available to be recovered include water, energy and nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and organics in the form of treated bioeffluent, biogas and biosolids respectively. Apart from that, there is also other potential resources to be developed and explored from sewerage sector include production of biodiesel from algae and phosphorus extraction from sewage sludge in the form of calcium phosphate or struvite. As the above resources are recovered and reused within a community it contributes to overall environmental sustainability and reduces carbon and water footprint of Malaysia’s growth centers.. It is envisaged with stakeholders support and through the establishment of necessary Guidelines as well as incentives for Green Technology application will impact the triple bottom line of economics, environmental and societal needs. The benefits of converting waste to wealth, will lead to better economy (development of new technology, new source of economy and job opportunities); better environment (sustainable waste management practices, minimize the contribution to GHG & zero waste) and beneficial social aspects (sustainable & healthy living environment).
