SYNOPSIS

The KVMRT Sungai Buloh – Kajang Line is approximately 51km long with 41.7km of elevated and 9.3km of underground guideway. The mass rapid line is one of the major infrastructural projects in Malaysia. It has 31 elevated stations and 7 underground stations. The underground section traverses a dense, built environment, through parts of the Golden Triangle and the proposed KL International Financial District in Kuala Lumpur. The underground works of tunnelling and station excavation will be carried out in Kenny Hill Formation and the complex karst of Kuala Lumpur Limestone Formation. The tunnelling works will be carried out using Tunnel Boring Machines through the Central Business District to minimise social, environmental as well tunnelling related impacts to the built environment.  The objective of this project is to deliver a mass rapid transit network that helps mitigate traffic congestion and provides connectivity by integration with existing networks of LRT, monorail & KTM Komuter.

This evening talk will present some of the geotechnical considerations for the underground works. Some aspects considered included design of soil investigation, choice of retention system and the impact of geology on underground related works.
