Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has recently launched its Draft Greater KL/ Klang Valley Land Public Transport Master Plan which sets out an integrated 20 year plan to transform land public transport in the region responding to local needs and aspirations, and providing consistency with the DBKL City Plan, the Structure and Local Plans within Selangor and the Putrajaya Plan. The NKRA had previously researched land public transport issues in the region and developed an initial set of initiatives to improve land public transport in the Greater KL/ Klang Valley Region. The Greater KL/ Klang Valley Land Public Transport Master Plan builds on these to provide a 20 year plan to aid the aspiration for a World Class City. The Greater KL/ Klang Valley Land Public Transport Master Plan is an assembly of the policy instruments, modal proposals and transformation plans with a delivery plan for implementation, funding sources and outlines the requirements for performance monitoring.

The proposed Melaka Tram Project in the State of Melaka was assigned to MRAILS INTERNATIONAL SDN BHD (MRAILS) as a Special Purpose Vehicle. The Tram corridor will begin from its Depot adjacent to the Ayer Keroh Toll plaza heading to the Heritage Town of Melaka with a distance of 40km covering 11 out of 14 major tourist hot spots. MRAILS proposes its latest technology, the first of its kind in the world call “THE NEXT GENERATION TRAM” an eco-green environmental friendly that runs on NGV engine which is designed in compliance with the Heritage Impact of Melaka as listed under the UNESCO’s World Heritage List established on 7th July 2008. The (SPAD) is currently and proponent of Melaka TRAM project (MRAILS) are inviting feedbacks from the public. This IEM Forum is being organised by the HTETD as a platform for learned discourse among engineers on various controversial issues that have since been raised at other venues, main stream media, websites, etc.  Views from the forum will be summarised by IEM and these will then be forwarded to the SPAD and MRAILS as “ENGINEERS’ FEEDBACK” and also serve to provide an update on the IEM Position Paper on Public Transport.

We have invited several professional engineers and academicians (who may have more insights to better explain the controversial issues or even raise more new issues for discussion) to assist the Moderator, Prof. Dr. Farhan make the Forum more lively. Invitations are also sent out to SPAD and Project Proponent to send their representatives. We hope engineers who attend the Forum will share their views freely, and having gained more knowledge and insights to these controversial issues, you will be able to better articulate them in future venues, such as the town hall meetings organised by Resident Associations.

BIODATA OF Moderator
Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, Professor in Transport Studies School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia
Prof Farhan has nearly 18 years working experience in transport and traffic engineering as well as road safety.  He is presently a professor in transport studies school in civil engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He is a council member of the Road Engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM), the Chair of the REAM Standing Committee on Road Safety and is also a member of the Land Public Transport Commission. He has been involved in numerous international and national research and consultancy projects and has made a multitude amount of contribution to published research works.  His areas of research interest include sustainable transport issues, travel behaviour, traffic engineering, and road safety. Prof Farhan obtained his Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the Catholic University of America, Washington DC, before pursuing his MSc in Transport from the Imperial College London and subsequently Ph.D in Transport from the University of London, at University College London.
