In Malaysia, sewerage services provided in the form of waterborne sewerage systems were introduced as far back as the 1930s. With the rapid growth of population and good network of piped water and the country’s urbanization process, better sewerage systems were undertaken to phase out the less satisfactory disposal systems that led to increasing focus on the protection of public health, water resources and environment. The sewage treatment capability in all major urban centers in the country was enhanced with the introduction of modern sewerage systems, which during the later part of the twentieth century, major developments of sewerage sectors in Malaysia witnessed the most rapid and significant modernization of the sewerage facilities. Bunus Regional Sewage Treatment Plant (RSTP) is one of the largest and most modern sewage treatment plants that covers a total sewerage catchment of 70 km2 comprising Gombak, Bunus and the Ampang-Ulu Klang areas including TAR College, Wardieburn Camp and Wangsa Maju. This plant is one of major initiatives taken by the Malaysian Government under the long term national sewerage development program with an aim to improve environment quality through reducing the pollution loads discharged to rivers, coastal water and the land. The technical visit aims to provide knowledge and awareness on the sewerage system cycle and its role in the river pollution management.
