PURPOSE OF VISIT Keppel Shipyard Keppel Shipyard located in Singapore is the industry’s leading ship repairer with expertise to undertake the entire spectrum of repair and modification work for a variety of vessels. Keppel offers innovative and cost-effective solutions to their customers upholding a strong track record in the repair of tankers, containerships, dry cargo vessels, gas carriers and offshore support vessels. In Asia Keppel is one of the most established repair yards for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vessels backed by a proven track record, technological capabilities, dedicated facilities and comprehensive infrastructure. Keppel is also leading in the conversion of Floating Production and Offloading (FPSO) units, Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessels and Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU). Keppel offers both sectors of ship repair/building and Offshore Engineering that would be of interest to multi discipline engineers anytime. University Teknologi Malaysia (Mechanical Engineering Faculty) The Marine Laboratory located at the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru had began its operations since 1997. The laboratory is equipped with a 120m (long) X 4m (breadth) X 2.5m (water depth) towing tank. In South East Asia, it can be regarded as the most well equipped Marine Technology Laboratory located within the university campus. For drag analysis, the Towing Tank carriage can tow ship models at a maximum speed of 5m/s. The wave generator can generate regular and irregular waves for studies involving the behavior of vessels in the sea environment. The towing tank is now used not only for academic purposes but also for research and consultancy work. The laboratory provides excellent support to the Naval Architecture Bachelor program as well as for the research work at the Masters and PhD levels. The facility available at the Marine Laboratory now serves the marine industry in carrying out various tests including resistance, propulsion, seakeeping and manoeuvring. The tests which were previously carried out mainly for ships models are now extended to cover the ocean engineering fields such as the behavior of semi-submersibles, TLP, moorings and risers. With such capabilities, the Laboratory has also gained international accreditation from the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC).
