SYNOPSIS
Smart Grid has attracted much attention from the industry, academia as well as the policy makers. However, there are many definitions of Smart Grid, and how a grid can be considered as "smart". This talk will provide a brief overview on the various definitions of Smart Grid and the enabling technologies that contribute to the "smartness" of the grid. The main characteristics of the Smart Grid as suggested in the 6 IEC white papers on strategy and trends for the future will be highlighted, and the challenges of its implementation will be discussed.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. Hew Wooi Ping received his BEng, in 1981 and MEng in Engineering in 1990,from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) . He then obtained his PHD degree in 2000 from University of Malaya. He currently serves as professor in Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Center (UMPEDAC), University of Malaya, Malaysia. His research projects include Hybrid Solar Research Suitable for Rural Electrifications (2011-2016), Design of a Six Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Wind Generator Using Finite Element Analysis (2010-2012),Design and Development of High Energy Efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) Vector Drive System with Regenerative Capability (2008-2010)
