SYNOPSIS
Talk on Advanced Unattended Payment Terminals Technology
- Self-Service Parking, Mass Rapid Transit Ticketing and Automated Payment Petrol Dispensing Terminals

Unattended payment technology (UPT) has evolved very rapidly over the past decade and a half.  This presentation examines the key technologies common to unattended payment solutions and highlights three disparate implementations of UPT.  The first of these is the pay and display parking meters for on-street parking applications.  This will be followed by an advanced public transport ticketing payment infrastructure using smart token and mobile components.  The third UPT solution describes outdoor payment terminals systems widely deployed in petrol stations supporting chip enabled credit cards and other non-cash payment products.

Today UPT solutions are widely deployed in all types of environments where unattended payment provides value add, enabling payment convenience and security.

This presentation will be interesting to engineers, managers and professionals involved with payment solutions as they will gain insights into many ideas and design methodologies incorporated into modern UPT based solutions.

BIODATA OF PRESENTER

Eddy has very diverse technology deployment and development experience in the oil and other technology industries.  As a data acquisition engineer/manager operating in the oil exploration and production industry in the 1980s, he was involved in managing and deploying highly advanced, real-time data acquisition systems using state of the art technology. After a series of technical management positions, Eddy left the oil industry in 1987 and returned to Malaysia to start up a KWh meter facility (Metertek) for Schlumberger; then the world’s largest KWH meter manufacturer.  From 1988 to 1992, as the managing director of Metertek, Eddy built this company to become the largest supplier of KWh meters to TNB, SEB and SESCo.  In 1993, he left Metertek to assume responsibility for sales marketing and business development for all Schlumberger utility metering products in the Asia-Pacific region.

In 1994, Eddy assumed responsibility for a Schlumberger technology product line that develops, manufactures and deploys advanced unattended payment terminals in the Asia-Pacific region.  In this role, he introduced the world’s first disposable smart card based parking meter system into Hong Kong for the HK Transport Department.  After leaving Schlumberger, he consulted for Siemens transportation group and conceptualized an advanced automatic fare collection solution for deployment in Asia by Siemens.  Eddy was also a business and technology consultant for SHELL Asia. He actively assisted in the forecourt (petrol station) cashless payment system deployed by SHELL as well as co-authoring the SHELL cashless payment business plan for Malaysia.

Eddy was trained as an electrical engineer and is presently a committee member of the ICTSIG in IEM.
