SYNOPSIS
Most Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) are adopting the philosophy of Outcome Based Education. For engineering programs, especially those accredited by ABET and countries who are signatories of the Washington Accord, are required to fulfil certain Program Outcomes. Some of these outcomes relate to the impact of the engineering solutions in terms of economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability. Although most institutions have adopted some course activities to address these concerns, in general these efforts are done in silos and not in a holistic manner at the institutional level. The objective of the talk is to share the concept of service learning in engineering education and how this method can be used to attain certain of the program outcomes in a more holistic manner.
