SYNOPSIS

TITLE: Taking Planned Steps to Evolve from Engineers to Project Manager (by Ir. Hj. Tunai Shamsidi)

My work now managing public infrastructural projects follows having made unconscious and unplanned career moves starting as a process engineer in Oil & Gas industry. Being unplanned the route taken had been circuitous and challenging. There were lessons that could be learned from the challenges I had to meet to become a project manager. An engineer may get to become the project manager he wants to be by planning the career moves which in my case I had been making inadvertently most of the time. My talk is about giving the idea that an engineer at some junctions of his career could take the options and plan becoming a project manager on major projects.

TITLE: Evolution from Engineers to Project Manager (by Engr. Kanagasingam K.P)

The speaker traces his career journey from that of a civil engineering graduate to a project manager, i.e. from the black and white world of engineering to the grey world of project management. Project management is normally a second field of interest. Some even refer to it as the accidental professional. Project managers all specialize in managing projects in a specific field, such as capital projects’ development and construction, new product development including IT software, etc. In his journey, he begins to understand the business needs for which projects are undertaken, and that it is not primarily about the triple constraints (scope, time & cost) normally discussed in this field, but also the importance of human elements and communication to project success.

TITLE: Evolution from Engineers to Project Manager (by Ir. Jamaiatul Lailah)

Project management is rather a new chapter for the speaker. Being mainly involved as an engineer in the past projects and now been tasked to involve partly in managing the projects introduce different perspectives of responsibilities in the projects accomplishment. This is when project management becomes important, as well as the challenges in the adaptation and learning process to understand the roles of project manager in all projects that could range from simple to complex.
