SYNOPSIS

In Malaysia, motorcyclists account for almost 70% of road fatalities in urban areas due to high exposure to collision with other motorized vehicles. As the country is undergoing rapid development in the city centers, the road environment become more challenging for motorcyclists to use in a safe manner. Reduced lane width in construction zones for example increases the proximity between motorcyclists and other vehicles and thereby elevating the risk of collision. A fall even in low speed impact could prove fatal among motorcyclists especially due to injuries to the head. Owing this, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has been conducting various research works to find ways to mitigate the risks among motorcyclists from the perspective of the road environment, the vehicle as well as the behavior.  Recently, MIROS has undertaken its research agenda a step further in a joint collaboration work with several international research institutes in developing an assessment model for motorcyclist safety in urban areas through the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) platform. This session will discuss about the work carried out by MIROS to tackle road traffic injuries among motorcyclists and how iRAP contributes to the effort.
