SYNOPSIS

1.    WATERPROOFING

To some, waterproofing is an afterthought – a nuisance “to do” which consumes project dollars.  Yet, the cost of poor waterproofing runs into the multi-billions of dollars annually.  In truth, correct design, selection and installation of waterproofing typically costs less than 0.1% of a project’s build price, yet may save a project many millions in rectifications, operating costs, and extend operational lifetime.

But, how do we design structures and waterproofing correctly?  What makes a waterproofing material the right one for the job?  What are the considerations, pros and cons of different waterproofing technologies?  How do we know if it is applied properly?

These and many other burning waterproofing questions will be answered at this session.  The speaker will introduce below ground and above ground building envelope waterproofing, the relevant codes and industry standards, and discuss the various waterproofing technologies, their pros and cons, including sheet membranes, liquid applied membranes and integral waterproofing.

The speaker will detail the challenges (and solutions) frequently encountered in designing, selecting, specifying and installing waterproofing for high rise, high rise residential, commercial, domestic and infrastructure projects.  Project case studies and experiences will also be shared to better illustrate the application of each material.

Given the consequences to cost, time and reputation resulting from water ingress, this session will prove extremely beneficial for those of you who need to make the important decisions regarding waterproofing.

2.    FIREPROOFING

Fire protection product is a life-saving product critical for steel structures.  It is defined as “Any product that, in the event of fire, actively or passively acts to reduce the rate of temperature rise of a building element”.  Building elements are any part of a building necessary to maintain the structural integrity or prevent the spread of fire when exposed to elevated temperatures including beams, such as girders, trusses or joists, columns, floors, roofs and walls.

Fire protection isn't just a good thing to have in a steel-framed building — it's required by the building code. Building codes are developed according to local conditions, demands and regulations, the requirements for fire protection products’ performance, as regulated by local Building codes, may be different from country to country.

It is collective term though to describe fire protection products, and yet, the functionality and working mechanism of products may be different from each other.  Therefore, it should be clear to the specifying professionals that the right product should be put to the right place and performed to fit for the purpose. Therefore, it is important to know how the performance of products can quantified and be measureable before selection of the product system.
To achieve this purpose, a knowledge base learning is deemed necessary before a wise choice is made.
