COURSE SYNOPSIS

Have you ever experienced unexplained electrical phenomena which is confusing at times or perhaps faced some frustrating situation in understanding those unforeseen phenomena? Do we have any standards on power quality (PQ) measurement for PQ meters? What about harmonics? Why should we concern about all those topics? If you have doubts or wanting to know more about all these topics related to PQ, then this session is the right avenue for you to find out and get enlightenment.  In this session,3 international standards on PQ will be discussed, viz. the IEC 61000-4-30 “Testing and measurement techniques – Power quality measurement methods”, IEEE Standard 1159 “IEEE Recommended Practice for Monitoring Electric Power Quality” and IEEE Standard 519 “IEEE Recommended Practice and Requirements for Harmonic Control in Electric Power Systems”

IEC 61000-4-30 provides the standards for power quality meters. This is the only recommended standard for all power quality meters such that all measurement is aligned and same for the same class of meters. This session will go into details of this standard and cross reference to IEC 62586-1 and IEC 62586-2 for the testing of PQ meters. IEEE 1159 lists out the recommended practice for monitoring power quality (PQ) in general and provides practical approach to broad aspect of PQ. The topics covered in this session on PQ are extracted from IEEE 1159 and practical approach to PQ will be discussed too. IEEE 519-2014 is a document where it recommends practice and requirements for harmonic control in electric power systems. The latest IEEE 519-2014 is viewed as a paradigm shift document compare to previous version. This session will expound of the comparison between the 2014 and 1999 versions.

Target Participants : Consultants and end users in utility and critical power segment (eg: semiconductor, F&B, data centre, airport, hospital etc)

SPEAKER’S BIODATA

Dr. John Cheng is the Senior Manager for Power Quality Offer Marketing East Asia Japan based in Singapore. He has been working on PQ related topics since 1999, and he is trained in USA on PQ from 2005-2006. He has conducted several seminars, classes and also has been invited as guest speaker for conferences on the PQ and harmonic topics in APAC region since 2006. He obtained his doctorate degree from Singapore Nanyang Technological University in 2007 in the area of power electronics, and his master degree from National University of Singapore in 1999 in the area of power system. He has published 9 articles in various journals, transactions, conferences and white papers. Dr. John is registered Chartered Engineer (UK), Certified Energy Manager (AEE, USA), Certified Energy Auditor (AEE, USA), Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (AEE, USA). He is also the Senior Member of IEEE (USA), Member of IET (UK) and Member of AEE (USA).
