SYNOPSIS

BS EN 1504 is the national standard for Britain and European Nations in concrete diagnosis, maintenance and repair. It was developed as a result of chaos in such practices and subdue repair quality previously. The objective of such standard is to define appropriate procedures and characteristics for systematic repair in view of optimum costs and durability.

There are 10 parts in the standards. The key parts of the standard are outlined hereunder:

- BS EN 1504-9 sets out assessment of defects and specification guidelines for choosing
   the right products and systems for task in hand.
- BS EN 1504-10 sets out material application guidelines for contractors.
- BS EN 1504, 2-7 classifies the products and systems which can be used
- BS EN 1504-8 specifies procedures for quality control and evaluation of conformity and
   compliance of the products for manufacturers

The holistic approach of concrete repair includes addressing the restoration of structural strength of concrete matrix. Additionally, it also includes tackling the corrosion of reinforcement steel bars and the passivity protection thereof. Nevertheless, we must address the differences in local climate, availability of products and construction practices during the selection of repair products and procedures in order to realise the principles in and objectives of such practices.

1. Dr. PAYAM SHAFIGH

Dr. PAYAM SHAFIGH has received his doctoral degree (with distinction) in Structural Engineering & Materials from the University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2013. He obtained his MSc. in Civil Engineering-Structure (2003) and BSc. in Civil Engineering (2000) from the University of Mazandaran, Iran. After his doctoral degree, he was appointed as Research Fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Malaya for two years and currently he is the Senior Lecturer in the Department of Building Surveying, Faculty of Built Environment, University of Malaya.

He received a number of national and international awards such as 2nd place award the American Concrete Institute (ACI) in concrete cube strength competition in 2000; ACI-Iran chapter award for the best MSc. thesis in civil engineering in 2003; 1st place award the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya for the highest number of ISI indexed publications in 2012.

He has more than 50 journal publications in which 46 are ISI indexed. He is reviewer for more than 60 international journals and he was recognized as the Outstanding Reviewer for several journals such as journal of Construction and Building Materials (2014, 2016 & 2017), Journal of Cleaner Production (2016 & 2017), journal of Engineering Structures (2017) and Journal of Building Engineering (2017).

He has supervised 10 MSc. and 4 PhD students and currently, he has 4 MSc. and 10 PhD students under his supervision. He has taught courses of Concrete Technology, Construction Materials, Theory of Structure, Structural Design and Strength of Materials. His research interests include Lightweight Concrete structures, Concrete Composites, Concrete Thermal Properties, Concrete Repair and Strengthening of Concrete Structures. To date, he has the highest research records in “Lightweight Aggregate Concrete” based on the Scopus database.

2. Mr KUAN YOU WAI

Mr KUAN YOU WAI has nineteen (19) years of experiences in contracting repair work in concrete repair, waterproofing, cracking, leaking, plumbing and mould remediation. Ten (10) years of experiences in Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection in Dampness and Concrete. An advisory committee in the authorities ; {a}. Focus Group in Construction Permit, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government (KPKT) and {b.} CIS 7 Quality Assessment Systems for Building Work, Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB)
