SYNOPSIS
Malaysia has experienced a lot of changes in development from agriculture base to industrial base in achieving developed nation after independent. During this transition, Malaysia has raised environmental issues on water, air and waste management. In order to balance the environment and development, Malaysia is committed in implementation of sustainable development, thus by 1974, Environmental Quality Act (EQA) (ACT 127) was gazetted as a control mechanism. The EQA 1974 kept evolving as different e environmental issues being raised by stakeholders. By 2002, Malaysia had introduced Policy on the Environment and focus on integrated environmental management from education to international bilateral commitment.
In this digital era, Malaysia has adopted a policy on Industrial Revolution 4.0. The issues of environment in Malaysia focus on new type of waste from digital technologies and limitation of space in disposing. Malaysia moves to new policy in implementing integrated waste management, industrial ecology and even in environmental sound technologies to control waste from emission or discharge. The 35 years old EQA 1974 needs to be reform to suit the latest environmental issues. Hence, the Department of Environment (DOE) is working towards a holistic approach regulation to replace EQA 1974.
