SYNOPSIS
The aim of this talk is to provoke the audience to reconsider the established norms in approaching design, to seek new ways to translate the current generation’s unprecedented access to data and information and to assimilate all this into a new understanding of “smart structures”. The Speaker will share insights on the current status and potential future directions of design for such smart structures. The talk evolves around the relationship between design and the search to apply lessons we can learn from the wisdom of the past, based on the new tools that we have today. In particular, the talk offers a perspective on how collaboration between diverse fields becomes more and more relevant in finding optimized solutions.
SPEAKER BIODATA
Ir. NG PEK HAR
Ir Ng obtained an Honours Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Civil & Structural Engineering from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in 1985. Pek Har has been a practicing engineer since 1990, and brings to Web Structures a wealth of experience in design consultancy on residential and institutional buildings, as well as on Geotechnical and Civil Engineering projects.
Peck Har is an engineer and an educator. She is one of the principal directors of the visionary engineering firm, Web Structures. The firm is a pioneer in “fusion engineering” and more recently a leading advocate of integrated design through technology augmentation and advanced computational design with the formation and development of their “Future Design Studio”. Pek Har will share her vision of the design industry, both locally and globally, and will touch on some of the social, environmental issues at play, as well as design challenges and opportunities.
