SYNOPSIS

Since the Piper Alpha disaster in July 1988, Safety Management has become a priority for Shell and others in the Oil and Gas industry. Undoubtedly Safety Management, which relies on tools, processes and procedures, is responsible for a step change in the safety performance improvement of the Oil and Gas industry. Yet the industry still experienced major safety incidents. The pursuit of Goal Zero – “No harm and No Leaks” appears to be an elusive dream for the industry. Some companies such as Shell turn to Personal Safety Leadership to compliment Safety Management.
While Safety Management is about “doing”, Personal Safety Leadership is about “being”. Personal Safety Leader inspire others to want to be safe. A Personal Safety Leader, inter alia, demonstrates care and respect for his people, has a sense of chronic unease, is authentic, encourages open and honest discussions to surface dilemmas and actively seeks, acknowledges and reward good safety behavior.
