SYNOPSIS
With the growing disruption in the construction industry, the geotechnical engineer is often tasked with solving geotechnical problems with solutions that are safer, more cost-effective and sustainable. Often, the criteria for optimizing these geotechnical solutions have been very narrow or constrained with the following factors; insufficient Soil Investigation information, unclear or poorly communicated project expectations or fixed mindset of project stakeholders. Deriving an optimized geotechnical solution is not about reducing the cost only but should also encompasses saving the resources material and time. Sometimes, optimization of geotechnical solution may not be limited to a single geotechnical technique but may require a combination of various geotechnical techniques. This seminar will highlight the key recipe in optimization of a geotechnical solution. Three case studies have been selected to illustrate how effective geotechnical solutions and optimisations can be done with Ground Improvement. The selected projects include geotechnical solutions for earth retention support systems for a basement excavation, foundations on ex-mining and karst geology and ground improvement solution for oil and gas tanks on reclaimed land.
