SYNOPSIS
This presentation will elaborate on one of Land Public Transport Commission’s (SPAD) main initiatives in enhancing public bus transportation in Malaysia, specifically in the northern states, which came about in view of the nation’s low mode share of around 15% for public transportation.
The project’s scope is to produce an implementation plan for the revised bus routes and other related enhancements for the selected pilot district(s) for the states of Perlis, Kedah and Pulau Pinang within the year 2013. The audience will be able to understand Network Planning principle, as the technical approach for the revised enhancements, that replaces Radial Network Strategies which has been the legacy system implemented in Malaysia. Two basic principles underpin the network effect. The first principle is to provide a simple and stable inter-connected network of public transport lines throughout the day with a structure and timetable that is easy for users to learn and understand. The second principle of network planning is to accept and support the proposition that many, potentially even a majority, of travelers will need to transfer between services to access their selected destination. Benefits and technical requirements of the principle will be elaborated.
From here, the audience will be able to share with the experience from the speaker on project management approaches, especially on which of the 9 Knowledge Areas that are being focused on, and the lessons learnt from the project. Effects of green sustainability will also be touched on to gauge the project’s positive impact to the environment.
