SYNOPSYS
As engineers, we design and specify appropriate materials to ensure our end product functions. Assets not only needs to be functional, it has to be attractivce and have the relevant human touch. In the oil & gas industry, where natural resources are being extracted to enrich our lives, and allow for modernization. Owners and Operators only focus on certain aspects. Then one factor is forgotten, the horrible C word, “corrosion”, that leads to costly failures. Here it is not only just about sustainability but also minimizing the negative impact on the environment and the earth’s natural resources. Imagine, when the global cost of the corrosion is US$2.5 trillion (3.4% of the global GDP), how are we building sustainable projects? The most significant revelation of a global study identified that there is a need for a change – within organizations worldwide – in how corrosion decisions re made and communicated. This presentation will explore corrosion technology, business and economics in terms of sustainability of oil and gas engineering projects and infrastructure in three key areas. • Corrosion cost and its negative implications • Asset integrity and sustainability for future generations • Ensure countries are utilizing an integrated platform for corrosion management for its professionals.
SPEAKER BIODATA
Ms. Michelle Lau is the General Manager at Mach3 Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and holds a NACE Interna-tional Cathodic Protection Specialist certification. She is an IEM Graduate member and has been an active member of NACE International for more than 15 years and currently serves as the Director for East Asia & Pacific Area for the term 2014 to 2017. She received her Bachelor Materials Engineering from Monash University, Australia in 1996 and her career for the past 20 years has been in the field of Cathodic Protection for the Oil and Gas, Power Generation and Water Utility industry. Writing design specifications, performing inspections and audits for cross country pipelines, storage tanks, plant piping, marine structures, intake and offshore structures are amongst the challenging projects which takes her around Malaysia as well as to many countries in the Asia Pacific Region. She is also one of the very few certified Cathodic Protection Specialist in Malaysia.
Apart from that, she has given technical presentations on the awareness of corrosion, cathodic protection and corrosion control at many international conferences and corrosion management workshops. Her passion and tireless contribution is in combatting corrosion.
