SYNOPSIS

In this 2-hour session, Ir. Thong Chin Mun will share the design of half joint in precast beam. Half joint is referred to the top part of beam end where the bottom part has been recessed. Beam section depth is reduced to about half of its full depth and then reduced drastically the shear and moment capacities. Detailing of the joint is especially important as the reinforcements shall be arranged to satisfy various requirements within a packed space. In the sharing, Ir. Thong will demonstrate the thinking of getting a feasible solution.


SPEAKER BIODATA

Ir. Thong Chin Mun has been working on structural design since 2001 and joined precast industry since 2007. He has obtained his Master of Engineering from University Teknologi Malaysia in 2002. Currently he is the principal consultant in SAS Consult.

Ir. Thong has been involved in precast design for more than hundred structures, and he was main designer for more than half of those. He does framing, modeling, precast element calculations, spreadsheets and detailing. He handles precast beams (both reinforced concrete or prestressed), columns, prestressed hollow core slabs, half slabs, unpropped planks, double-tees, staircases, jetty components etc. His projects includes Pipe racks for Rapid, Pengerang, Kangkar Tebrau Substation Building, Rembau Hospital, Flood Mitigation Works at Sungai Rasah km 5.6, DHL Warehouse, schools, etc.
