SYNOPSIS

The Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria (SGISC) are currently under finalisation by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).  These criteria should be based on the physics of the specific phenomena leading to stability failures.  The justification of SGISC can be completed in the form of a multi-tiered approached, whereby a ship would be checked for a vulnerability in the first tiers and, if found vulnerable, then the ship would be evaluated using the second level vulnerability criteria.  If still found vulnerable, then the ship would be evaluated using state-of-the-art direct assessment methods.
