SYNOPSIS
This talk gives a brief introduction of the various tunnelling methods and emphasises the preference by both contractors and designers in major tunnelling works around the world, especially in China, India, Middle East and Southeast Asia region. This also includes the selection of the most suitable TBM method for each major infrastructure project. In addition, the different tunnel design practices in various countries will be highlighted. Special topics on fire resistant and durability design of tunnel based on different codes will also be discussed.
The outline for the talks is as follows:- i. Introduction to various Tunnelling Methods (e.g. Drill & Blast, Tunnel Boring Machine, NATM, Cut & Cover & Immersed Tube) ii. Selection of Tunnelling Method iii. Tunnelling Design & Construction Practices iv. Special Topics (Fire Design and Durability Design)
BIODATA OF SPEAKERS
Ir. Eddie Wong graduated from University of London in year 1987 with a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. He is currently a senior resident engineer on site. He has 30 years of experience in civil and geotechnical engineering especially in tunnelling and underground projects. He has extensive experience in tunnelling through hard rock, and soft ground as well as in immersed tube tunnel. He has worked in Hong Kong, China, India, Middle East and Southeast Asia, which include Vietnam & Malaysia. He was the project manager of for one of the underground contracts in the KVMRT Line 2 project. He is also currently a Technical Director at AECOM, Hong Kong.
Ir. Terry Ma graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic University in year 1996 with a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. He is currently working as Lead Design Consultants (LDC) in the KVMRT Line 2 project to supervising and coordinating the Detailed Design Consultants for the tunnelling aspects. He has a vast experience and exposure in detailed design of tunnelling works and geotechnical aspect that is related to major tunnelling works for more than 20 years. He has extensive experience in tunnel design, including cut & cover tunnels and bored tunnels hard rock, soft ground and mixed ground conditions. He is also actively involved in tunnelling projects in different countries such as China, India, Middle East, Thailand and Malaysia. He is also currently an Associate Director at AECOM, Hong Kong.
