SYNOPSIS
5th generation wireless systems, abbreviated 5G, are improved wireless network technologies scheduled for commercial deployment in 2020 and later. Claiming speeds of up to 100x that of 4G, 5G represents a quantum leap in the field of mobile telecommunications. Most major telco players have already hopped on to the 5G bandwagon. Lab and field trials are in progress while the standards are still evolving.
Some frequently asked questions include • When will 5G really arrive? • What does 5G promise to the ordinary mobile user? • What will be the killer application/s for 5G? • Will 5G make Wi-Fi obsolete? • Will 5G make fibre obsolete? • Does 5G mean network operators should avoid investment in LTE (4G) technologies? • Will there be a 6G?
The talk will include a brief history of mobile communications, the state-of-the-art technologies, the promise of the future and the challenges faced.
