SYNOPSIS
Getting a Quart out of a Pint Pot” (& some unique experiences from utility practice).
Electricity supply system & operation in Malaysia has undergone tremendous change over the last half century. The power supply system operation during the earlier years (1960s & 1970s) needed some “innovative engineering decision-making” in view of the relatively weak, low capacity infrastructure while demand growth was driven by national economic development policies.
This presentation recollects some “out of the ordinary first hand” experiences during the presenter's CEB/LLN/TNB service from 1963 to 1999. The presenter had the opportunity to learn from some very experienced, and dynamic engineers who practiced “out of the box thinking” in their operation practices. The presentation draws from that experience as well as some unusual personal incidents during his service over that period.
One of the highlights is the case of minimising supply disruption to customers under emergency conditions when the transformer supply capacity was severely curtailed due to a transformer fault in a district where the load exceeded the transformer firm capacity. This involved exploiting a “low-tech innovation” to maximise supply to the customers by overloading the remaining transformers without damaging the remaining transformers in service.
BIODATA OF SPEAKERS
Ir. Lalchand is an electrical engineering graduate from the Brighton College of Technology United Kingdom (1963). He served the main electricity supply utility in Malaysia, TNB, for a total of about 37 years (including on special assignments after mandatory retirement in 1994), mainly in Distribution Management, Corporate Planning and Corporate Audit. He credits his experience and professional development during his CEB & LLN employment with giving him the solid engineering foundation that has shaped his subsequent professional practice and the passion to uphold engineering and ethical principles.
After his retirement from TNB (at the end of 1999) he has been involved in various activities related to policy development and promotion of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, Green Technology, and Sustainable Development covering green buildings and materials, transport infrastructure and power supply. He was appointed as a Fellow of the Akademi Sains Malaysia (ASM) in 2014.
