SYNOPSIS
SF6 Gas Management and Handling in High Voltage Switchgears, Controlgears and Assemblies. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas has been used widely in High Voltage switchgears, controlgears and assemblies due to its excellent electrical insulation properties. With a much higher dielectric strength than air, it allows for the size reduction of the electrical equipment. However, SF6 needs to be managed and handled well because of it being a potent greenhouse gas with a much higher global warming potential compared to CO2.
The talk will be on SF6 Gas Management and Handling, covering the following areas.
• SF6 Gas Characteristics • SF6 Effects on the environment • SF6 Gas Management and Zero Emission concept • Future alternative to SF6
SPEAKER’S BIODATA
Mr. Sethuraman Muthukaruppan is the Principal Engineer (EHV Switchgear) in the Grid Solution Expertise Department of the TNB Grid Division. He graduated from Universiti Malaya with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) in 1998. He has been working with TNB for 19 years, previously taking up roles as an Engineer in the Condition Monitoring Unit and Senior Engineer in the Equipment Performance Unit, analysing performance of all primary equipment in the TNB Transmission System. Mr. Sethuraman is a certified trainer, ISO Lead Auditor and has undergone various trainings with foreign consultants. He conducts courses on Reliability Engineering Competency, SF6 Gas Management and Handling, GIS Fundamentals and Operations and Instrument Transformers and Capacitor Banks Design and Operation. He has also presented papers internationally in the CEPSI and Doble Conferences. Besides this, he is also the Head of the TNB Cross Functional Team on SF6 Gas Management. He mainly teaches on condition monitoring/reliability engineering, SF6 Gas management and HV GIS.
