SYNOPSIS

In all built environments, design of public toilets in particular must meet the Building By-Law (UBBL) and the local authority requirements. The applicable standard is the MS2015: Part 1:2006 – Public Toilet Design Criteria which was revised in 2017 incorporated a number of recommendations on the layouts of toilets in particular Shopping Malls. The revised standard had also included MS1402: Part 1:2006 – Code of Practice for Sanitary System in Buildings Annex A “Sanitary accommodation requirement” to make it comprehensive when designing the Public toilets. Selection of Sanitary fixtures is of importance in order to meet the design criteria stipulated. These fixtures are workable and convenient to carry out maintenance to ensure the toilets meet the intended end user needs and requirements. SPAN had already imposed a mandatory dual flush WC of 6litres / 3 litres for all establishments since January 2012.with the objective of conserving treated water. With CIDB Act (Act 520) amendment comes into full force in 2017, it is to regulate the quality of construction materials used in the construction industry in accordance the Fourth Schedule of the Act. Eighteen different products are specified in the schedule and sanitary ware is one of them. Any person who deals or undertakes to deal with the construction materials specified in the Fourth Schedule without the CIDB certification shall be guilty of an offence and shall be, upon conviction, liable to a fine of not less than RM10,000 but not more than RM500,000.

SPEAKER BIODATA

MS SHARIFAH SUZANA SIMMONDS, a member of the Work Group on the revision of MS2015 is also the Corporate Branding & Special Projects – Senior Manager of DOE Group for the past 16 years. She has been involved in the sanitary ware trade for the past 27 years. She received her Interior Design training from UiTM and currently is one of Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) elected Council Member since 2014. She is also a registered person with Lembaga Akitek Malaysia (LAM IDS/12). She is a member of the ISC D, Technical Committee and Working Group in SIRIM to develop a new and revision of Malaysia Standard related to technical committee of sanitary ware and fittings. Some of the projects she had handled were KLIA, Sepang, KLCC, Wisma Putra, Putrajaya, MRT, Selayang Hospital etc.

Ir. GARY LIM is a member of the Building Services Technical Division and member of the Fire Advisory Board of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and a Management Diploma from New Zealand. He is a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM).  In 2016 he obtained Approved ISO31000 Risk Management Lead Trainer Certificate from G31000 Institution. Currently, he conducts courses regularly on the concepts and design in the area of Fire Engineering and Plumbing Engineering at all the IEM branches in Malaysia. He also conducts courses with Malaysia Institute of Insurance on these topics: The Art of Property Underwriting Profitability and Essence of Survey Report; Applying Fire Engineering Knowledge in Property Survey and Loss Control; Enterprise Risk Management & Business Continuity Management.
