SYNOPSIS
Pneumatic tyres or air filled tyres are part and parcel of vehicle components. They are made of an airtight casing filled with pneumatic air. A tread, usually reinforced with steel belting or other material, covers the inner core and provides the contact area with the road.
The pressure of the air inside the tyre is greater than the atmospheric pressure so that the tyre remains inflated even with the weight and load of a vehicle resting on it. The tyre air pressure provides resistance against forces that try to deform the tyre as well as cushioning effect as the tyre hits bumps on the road.
Since tyres are the only contact of a vehicle with the road surface, it is very important that the tyres are able to withstand all the adverse conditions of the road. In order to ensure safety, various International Standards have been drawn up and been adopted by the various manufacturers.
SIRIM have also drawn up the Malaysian Standard on these pneumatic tyres for the road vehicles, governing the design, production, testing and certification of these pneumatics tyres produced in Malaysia. The Malaysian Rubber Board have been entrusted to carry out testing and part of MS certification process of the locally made tyres based on the Malaysian Standard.
In this talk, the speaker will also highlight the various tests to be carried out as well as the process of certification to ensure these tyres are meeting the stipulated standards and quality requirements.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. Ahmad Nazir Kamaruddin joined the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) in 2001 as research officer. He obtained his Bachelor of Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical from University Technology of Malaysia and his MSc in Plymer Technology from Loughborough University, UK.
Since working at MRB, he has served on ‘Dry Rubber Product Unit’ for over seven (7) years, ‘Product Testing and Calibration Unit’ for seven (7) years and Global Testing & Consultancy for Rubber (G-TACR) for almost three (3) years. He currently assign as a signatory and Technical Manager at RRIM Tyre Testing Laboratory, MRB under QMS ISO/IEC 17025. He specialized on tyre standards and physical tyre testing. He also appoint as a Chairman for Technical Committee on Tyres, Rims & Valves (TC TRV) for Malaysian Standard (MS) since 2010.
