Introduction
Project Management Technical Division (PMTD) of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) recognises that research is an essential part of the development of the engineering profession of project management, and therefore is seeking to recognise research excellence through the establishment of a research award. Researchers who have shown excellence in their research fields related to project management are considered for the award. The award is open to all aspects of research that are able to demonstrate direct relevance to project management, and how the outcomes benefit project management. The award will be judged by a panel of eminent project managers of IEM and non-IEM members, representing both the professionals and academia.
Objectives of Award
1. To provide recognition and awards to those who have demonstrated excellence and contributed significantly to the development and improvement of research in project management 2. To provide quick research support to the young researchers who are in their early career for pursuing exciting and innovative research in frontier areas of project management 3. To promote excellent academic research in all aspects of project management
Eligibility Requirement 1. May come from disciplines other than project management but must contribute to the development of project, program management, project-oriented companies or any knowledge areas of project management this award 2. Citizens of Malaysia
3. Those currently pursuing Master’s programmes
(i.e. Master by Coursework and Master by Research) and Doctoral programmes (i.e. PhD, Engineering Doctorate and Industrial PhD) as well as in industrial professional routes will be evaluated separately
Award Category
The award is divided into three (3) categories as follows:
Category 1: Master's Student Best Research Award
• Nominees must be students who are currently pursuing Master by Coursework or Master by Research in higher learning institution in Malaysia. • Have demonstrated outstanding performance and achievement in terms of innovation, originality and creativity in undertaking research related to project management and have made significant contribution to the body of knowledge in terms of:
a) total research grant secured within the last 2 years; AND/OR b) number of published papers within the last 2 years; AND/OR c) number of presented papers in conferences/ seminars within the last 2 years
Category 2: Doctorate Student Best Research Award
• Nominees must be students who are currently pursuing PhD, Engineering Doctorate of Industrial PhD in higher learning institution in Malaysia
• Have demonstrated outstanding performance and achievement in terms of innovation, originality and creativity in undertaking research related to project management and made significant contribution to the body of knowledge • The research has contributed to the development of expertise and knowledge across the board in addition to
the receipt of recognition by external parties, particularly the industrial players in terms of:
a) total research grant secured within the last 2 years; AND/OR
b) number of published papers within the last
2 years; AND/OR
c) number of presented papers in conferences/ seminars within the last 2 years; AND/OR
d) number of commercialisation from the research end-products within the last 2 years; AND/OR
e) number of research awards received within the last 2 years
Category 3: Industrial Professional Best Research Award
• Nominees must be industry professionals practising in Malaysia
• Have demonstrated outstanding research related to project management and contributed to the development of science and through the technology that can be used by the industry
• The research also must meet the needs of the IEM as an engineering professional institution and national aspirations as well as improve the
welfare of life through contribution to socio- economic development of society and recognition by external parties, particularly the industrial players • The contribution is considered from:
a) total research grant secured within the last 2 years; AND/OR
b) number of published papers within the last
2 years; AND/OR
c) number of presented papers in conferences/ seminars within the last 2 years; AND/OR d) number of talks/courses delivered within the last 2 years; AND/OR
e) number of commercialisation from the research end-products within the last 2 years
Prizes
In each category, three (3) prizes are distinguished as follows:
1. Master's Student Best Research Award • 1st prize - RM 800.00 • 2nd prize - RM 400.00 • 3rd prize - RM 200.00 2. Doctorate Student Best Research Award • 1st prize - RM 1000.00 • 2nd prize - RM 600.00 • 3rd prize - RM 200.00 3. Industrial Professional Best Research Award • 1st prize - RM 1000.00 • 2nd prize - RM 600.00 • 3rd prize - RM 200.00
Criteria of Evaluation 1. The nominee(s) must have significantly advanced the concepts, knowledge and practices of the project management field through a published body of academic research and/or delivery of talks and courses.
2. The research must have an enduring theoretical, empirical or practical value in project management
3. The research must have significantly contributed to the betterment of the industry and improvement of the welfare of life through the development of end-products recognised by the society and external parties, particularly the industrial players.
Submission
Nominees who choose to be considered must submit an application that includes the following elements in the specified order:
1. A description of the nominee’s research performance and achievement (preferably in CV in maximum 2 pages)
2. Selected evidence of nominee’s research performance and achievement 3. A maximum of 1500 words essay on the contribution of project management practices and body of knowledge in the development of science and through the technology that can be used by the industry towards achieving the aspiration of TN50 (Format: Times New Roman size 12, 1.5 spacing, A4 size paper, tab at new paragraph)
