SYNOPSIS

Solar energy is one of the most promising renewable energy resources in Malaysia. The major applications of solar energy are Photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies. Photovoltaic converts the solar into electricity, whereas solar thermal converts the solar into useful heat. This talk is to give an introduction of these technologies on:
1.    the operating principle,
2.    types of solar cells and collectors,
3.    system components,
4.    system performance,
5.    applications
6.    combined photovoltaic solar thermal systems (PVT)
7.    some innovative/ creative examples

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Chan Hoy Yen did her bachelor degree in Chemical Technology (2001-2004) and master degree in Energy Technology (2006-2007) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and her PhD in solar energy (2008-2011) at University of Nottingham in United Kingdom.  Currently, she is a research fellow at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), UKM.

Her main research area is building integrated solar thermal technology; on-going research projects are “Thermal Analysis of Jet Solar Air Collector”, “Enhancement of Building Integrated Photovoltaics and Reduction of Cooling Load”, and a community project on “Creating and Promoting Green Pasar Malam”. Her research findings have been published in high impact factor academic journals such as “Energy and Buildings”, and “Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews”; presented and published papers in several conferences that organized by international organizations, including the World Renewable Energy Congress/ Network (WREC/N), Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Associations (REHVA) and World Society of Sustainable Energy (WSSET). During her PhD study, the research project was presented in SET 2010 (Early-Stage Research Scientists, Engineers and Technologists) for Britain Scientific Poster Competition at the House of Commons, London; which was shortlisted for Engineering category from hundreds of entries that represent the best engineering research from UK Universities.

In addition, she has also contributed to some national and international programmes. She was one of the panelists in the Panel Discussion session on Renewable Energy Curriculum Development during the 6th University Network of Climate and Ecosystems Change Adaptation Research (UN-CECAR) International Conference. She was then appointed by the UN-CECAR as the Malaysian Focal Point to develop the renewable energy courses for the United Nations University. Earlier on, she was also the project manager for “Indicator development for the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (REEE) and Solid Waste Management (SWM) Components”, a Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) project under the Malaysia – Denmark Environmental Cooperation Programme 2003-2006.
