SYNOPSIS

The Malaysian economic environment has transformed tremendously over the past four decades. This has required exponential growth in energy use and living quality as a result of increasing pollution and its environmental impact. Malaysia’s CO2 emission per-capita is double the world average and ranks third in ASEAN.

Malaysia pledged to reduce its carbon intensity by 45% at COP 21 in Paris in December 2015. This paper assesses the options of  contributing to the national carbon intensity reduction commitment, presents the current situation and future challenges, and proposes directions for decarbonisation of the Malaysian energy supply. These options could possibly also be used by other ASEAN member states with minor modification and customisation.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Dr. Chong Kok Boon holds  Bsc (Hons) in Physics from UKM in year 2001 and PhD in Condensed Matter & Materials Physics from Queen Mary University of London, UK in year 2008 and is attached to the Office of the Vice Chancellor and the Jeffery Sach's Center (JSC) for Sustainable Development at Sunway University. He has had extensive international experience as Advisor on education, including developing academics and research partnerships with Asian Institutions.

His power systems experience includes being a consultant to energy industry players such as Areva, Westinghouse, Siemen, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, China General Nuclear Power Group, as well as as panel advisor for Engineering & Physical Science Research Council (UK), European Research Council (EU), Oakridge National Laboratory (USA), National Natural Science Foundation of China (China).

His expertise in simulation of energy demand and supply, and policy studies on decarbonisation of energy systems, was well suited to him leading the JSC initiatives to develop options for decarbonisation of energy systems for Malaysia and ASEAN countries, which he presented to the ASEAN Ministers Forum in April 2017 at Sunway University.
